The Journey Begins....

After a great week of retirement and birthday celebrations, we are off. This morning’s jobs: put the last of the clothes and the cold food in the Roadtrek, and hitch the bikes to the bike rack on the back. But wait.... my bike, which my friend Guy Hervieux had just fixed up and tuned up, and which I carelessly left on the front patio last night - unlocked - has been stolen! This is an 18 year old bike (albeit with new tires and a new seat) but someone needed it more than I do and now it is on its own retirement journey. Monica very generously suggested I take hers, and so, we were on our way, a little later than planned, but pumped for our adventure.

Today was a beautiful, sunny autumn day and southern Alberta offered spectacular scenery. We drove for about 7 hours and are camped in the Townsite Campground at Waterton. Tomorrow, we explore....

It occurred to me this evening that since we left Edmonton, and with the exception of a speedy “hello” to the Hell’s Angels lunching beside us at Bowden (perhaps they were plotting to spring an accomplice from the Penitentiary!) I have not spoken to anyone but Owen all day - we paid for our gas at the pump, we sidestepped the National Park gate with our annual pass, there was no one manning the booth at the campground and I have had the camp bathroom all to myself....
